How to Create a WhatsApp Username and Keep Your Phone Number Private

WhatsApp has started introducing usernames, giving users a new way to connect without revealing their mobile numbers. The feature is being released in phases, meaning it may not yet be available on every account.

If you’ve received the update, here’s how to claim your username on both Android and iPhone.

Why WhatsApp Usernames Matter

Until now, anyone wanting to message you on WhatsApp generally needed your phone number. The new username feature changes that by allowing users to identify themselves with a unique handle instead.

This provides an extra layer of privacy, especially when chatting with people you’ve just met, participating in community groups, buying or selling online, or contacting businesses.

Steps to Create a WhatsApp Username on Android

If the feature has reached your account:

  1. Launch WhatsApp.
  2. Tap the three dot menu in the upper right corner.
  3. Open Settings.
  4. Select your profile.
  5. Tap Create Username.
  6. If you see Reserve Username instead, select that option.
  7. Type the username you want.
  8. If it is available, confirm your choice.
  9. If it has already been taken, WhatsApp will recommend similar alternatives.
  10. Tap Save, then Done.

Steps to Create a WhatsApp Username on iPhone

For iPhone users, the process is very similar:

  1. Open WhatsApp.
  2. Tap You at the bottom of the screen.
  3. Open your profile.
  4. Select Create Username.
  5. If prompted, tap Reserve Username.
  6. Enter your preferred username.
  7. Confirm it if available, or choose one of the suggested options.
  8. Tap Save, then Done.

Before You Choose a Username

The feature currently works only through the WhatsApp mobile app and is not yet available on WhatsApp Web or the desktop application.

Because the rollout is happening gradually, some users may have to wait before the option appears in their settings.

When selecting a username, consider using something that is easy for trusted contacts to recognise but does not reveal unnecessary personal information. Choosing a distinctive username can provide better privacy than using your full name.
